If you get this and you are not Jewish, I cannot even begin to explain it to you!

This goes back 2 generations, 3 if you are over 50. It also explains why many Jewish men died in their early 60's with a non-functional cardiovascular system and looked like today's men at 89
.

Before we start, there are some variations in ingredients because of the various types of Jewish taste (Polish, Litvack
, Dutch and Gallicianer).

Just as we Jews have six seasons of the year (winter, spring, summer, autumn, the slack season, and the busy season), we all focus on a main ingredient which, unfortunately and undeservedly, has disappeared from our diet. I'm talking, of course, about SCHMALTZ (chicken fat). SCHMALTZ has, for centuries, been the prime ingredient in almost every Jewish dish, and I feel it's time to revive it to its rightful place in our homes. (I have plans to distribute it in a green glass Gucci bottle with a label clearly saying: "low fat, no cholesterol, Newman's Choice, extra virgin SCHMALTZ." (It can't miss!) Then there are gribenes - pieces of chicken skin, deep fried in SCHMALTZ, onions and salt until crispy brown (Jewish bacon). This makes a great appetizer for the next cardiologist's convention.

There's also a nice chicken fricassee (stew) using the heart, gorgle (neck), pupick (a great delicacy, given to the favorite child, usually me), a fleegle (wing) or two, some ayelech (little premature eggs) and other various chicken innards, in a broth of SCHMALTZ, water, paprika, etc. We also have knishes (filled dough) and the eternal question, "Will that be liver, beef or potatoes, or all three?"
Other time-tested favorites are kishkeh, and its poor cousin, helzel (chicken or goose neck). Kishkeh is the gut of the cow, bought by the foot at the Kosher butcher. It is turned inside out, scalded and scraped. One end is sewn up and a mixture of flour, SCHMALTZ, onions, eggs, salt, pepper, etc., is spooned into the open end and squished down until it is full. The other end is sewn and the whole thing is boiled. Yummy!

My personal all-time favorite is watching my Zaida (grandpa) munch on boiled chicken feet.
For our next course we always had chicken soup with pieces of yellow-white, rubbery chicken skin floating in a greasy sea of lukshen (noodles), farfel (broken bits of matzah), tzibbeles (onions), mondlech (soup nuts), kneidlach (dumplings), kasha (groats), kliskelech and marech (marrow bones)
.
The main course, as I recall, was either boiled chicken, flanken, kackletten, hockfleish (chopped meat), and sometimes rib steaks, which were served either well done, burned or cremated. Occasionally we had barbecued liver done to a burned and hardened perfection in our own coal furnace.

Since we couldn't have milk with our meat meals, beverages consisted of cheap soda (Kik, Dominion Dry, seltzer in the spritz bottles).

Zei gezunt!!

Inspiration to Uncle Walter

Ariane, darling: Please, print this out and give it to Walter! Thank you- Love, Lisa

Dearest Walter!

We were so glad to hear, that you are home again - now you will get better, slowly, but surely....Went through similar situations, as you know ,but it will take a lot of patience to adjust. Please, get all the help that is available and do not try to do things on your own! I understand, you have a good Attendant now, use her presence as much as possible!

I consider myself so lucky, that over the last few years we had a chance to be together, with our families and friends! You are blessed with a brilliant mind, I hope this will help you philosophically to accept the limitations you may have to carry on with - I know, how hard this is, but indubitably possible! When you feel a little better, try to find humor in some situations, that DOES help! Right now, concentrate on the healing process, a mind (especially your brilliant mind...) is a powerful thing!

Music also helps me personally to accept sometimes certain difficult situations (remember the "Hobellied" from the "Verschwender"..?

So, keep on keeping on, as "they" say...We love you immeasurably and strongly feel, that you will get better, every day in every way!!!

Hugs to you and Ariane, your wonderful wife!

Love, Lisa,

Actually, your way is really better for your health Click Me!))) in the long run!

Had a rough night, but finally took a pain pill this morning and am beginning to feel a little better...sorry, I could not talk to you last night, but love you bunches!!! Thanks for calling...

Have a great day, and don't worry! There are two emotions that are rather useless and not very productive: "Regret" (what is in the past) and "Worry",( what might happen), so "they say"...

If at all possible, live in the Present, a day is a gift from God and truly a present ! Have Fun...

Unexpected Hugs

Life is filled with unexpected hugs.

- Elaine Singer.

A quote from Elaine Singer. She felt compelled to visited her daughter Susan's grave in the Jewish cemetary in Ft Lauderdale that day. Looking up and over and saw my father and sister's (Simon and Suzie). Then upon arriving home, she found a letter waiting from my mother.

I love this quote.

...Feeling Halfway Better Than Yesterday...

- Dr. Lisa Ruden-Earle

"One must stop from day to day, to always see the good in and be thankful for finding himself feeling halfway better than yesterday!"

Great quote on the human-condition, from one of my greatest sources of inspiration.

Subject: Hallo

Dear Lisa

Thank you for your frequent e-mails! The last one was very funny and brings the e-mail-problem to the point!!!!

Weiter in Deutsch:

Much Love from all of us!
Ariane

Meine liebe Ariane-

Wie man hier in English sagt: "Old age is not for Sissies"( Das Alter ist nicht fuer Feiglinge (((

I also had a pretty difficult year (Von einem Spital nach dem Andern...), the pacemaker seems to help a lot, but this Blood condition (MDS - Mylodiplastic Syndrome - check it with Google) where I have to check my Hemoglobin and the White Corpuscles every 3 weeks, seem to make me fairly weak, but I am doing the Best I am able to do. Yes, I still let Julie take me down to the pool in the Wheel chair, my legs are giving me too much pain, if I use them going uphill especially. I am getting Physical Therapy twice a week (at home) which are quite helpful.

May be?)

Alles Liebe, Lisa

Hallo Ariane!
I am sorry to hear of Walter's discomfort and loss of appetite. A quick note in case it might be helpful... Pam said to think about food or drink that might help moving digestion along. For example: Water (ALWAYS important), mineral oil, laxative (Abfuehrmittel?).

The cilia (Zilien? - Haerchen in dem Darm) that move digestion along may be damaged or not working so well. Think of food or drink that move through easily.

Hope this letter is not an unwanted intrusion.

Love to you both, from both of us...
---Dave and Pammie.
